Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing in Arizona

The Experience

Ready to take your climbing beyond the gym? This two-day introductory course near Phoenix and Scottsdale teaches the fundamental skills you need to climb outdoors, with hands-on instruction from AMGA- and PCGI-certified instructors. You’ll learn how to assess hazards, use climbing equipment, tie essential knots, manage ropes, and belay a climber safely. Along the way, you’ll work on footwork, balance, body positioning, and efficient movement on natural desert rock. No previous outdoor climbing experience is required; the course starts with the basics and builds your skills through practical instruction.

Over two full days in the field, you’ll develop your understanding of climbing safety and technique while putting what you learn into practice at the crag. Participants should be in moderate physical condition and able to hike one to two miles round-trip over uneven, rocky terrain while carrying personal gear. Ropes, protective hardware, team anchor equipment, permits, and land access fees are included. You’ll need to bring your own lunch, snacks, water, and personal climbing gear, or arrange to rent a harness, helmet, and climbing shoes.
